Success is a way of life for M. B. Lamar Middle School sixth-grader Jose “Joey” Mendoza, who has been officially recognized as the Laredo Independent School District (LISD) Student of the Month for February 2026.

A standout student with a diverse range of talents, Mendoza is heavily involved in both his school and the local community. At Lamar, he serves as a member of the Student Council, competes in UIL Listening Skills and Oral Reading, and keeps the beat as a percussionist for the Mighty Lion Band.

Beyond the classroom, Mendoza is an accomplished competitor in agricultural and vocational circles. As a member of the Cigarroa High School Junior FFA, his recent performances at the LIFE Fair were nothing short of dominant. His award-winning streak included:

  • Breed Champion and Reserve Grand Champion Broiler Rabbit

  • Reserve Grand Champion Baking Cookies

  • Reserve Grand Champion AG Mechanics Woodwork

  • Junior Showmanship honors

When he isn’t volunteering at the LIFE Fair or exploring his favorite subject, History, Mendoza enjoys the outdoors through hunting, fishing, and camping.

Looking toward the future, the former Alma Pierce Elementary student has his sights set on Texas A&M University in College Station. He plans to study Animal Science with the goal of becoming a veterinarian and livestock judge.

Mendoza, the son of Mary and Joe Mendoza, is slated to attend Nixon High School and the Business Industry and Public Service Early College Academy (BIPS) following his time at Lamar Middle.

The LISD Student of the Month program is proudly supported by local partners including the Laredo Federal Credit Union, Chick-fil-A Marketplace at Bob Bullock, and Laredo Orthodontics.
