At M. B. Lamar Middle School, our Makerspace unit continues to bring learning to life by blending literacy, creativity, and STEAM in meaningful, hands-on experiences. During Read Across America Week, students participated in a special Earth Day-inspired activity centered around Dr. Seuss’s The Lorax, connecting reading with real-world environmental awareness.
As part of the Makerspace rotation, students used Canva to design digital posters that communicate powerful messages about protecting our planet. Each design reflects student voice, creativity, and thoughtful decision-making as they explore how words and visuals can inspire others to care for the Earth. Students discussed environmental challenges, shared ideas for solutions, and used their designs to encourage positive action in their school community and beyond.
Librarian Ms. Loranca shared, “It has been inspiring to watch students engage with literature in such a meaningful way. The Lorax opens the door for important conversations, and our students are using their creativity to show that even small voices can make a big impact when it comes to caring for our planet.”
The activity also strengthened cross-curricular learning by combining reading comprehension, digital design skills, and environmental science concepts. Students collaborated, problem-solved, and reflected on how their choices today can shape the future of the environment.
As The Lorax reminds us, “Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.”
Our Lamar Lions 🦁 continue to demonstrate that when creativity, learning, and compassion come together, they can spark real change. 🌱🌍
