Who says science has to be boring? At M. B. Lamar Middle School, Mr. Garcia’s 6th grade science students recently discovered that some lessons are best served with a scoop of ice cream and a little fizz!
Students traded in their traditional classroom routine for a hands-on learning experience as they created their own root beer floats. As the root beer and ice cream came together, students observed the fizzing and bubbling reactions while exploring the science behind what was happening right in front of them.
The activity gave students a chance to experience science in a fun and memorable way, connecting classroom concepts to something they could see, taste, and enjoy. More than just making a delicious treat, students were encouraged to observe, ask questions, and think like scientists.
“Science is all about curiosity and discovery, and activities like this give students an opportunity to experience those things firsthand,” said Mr. Garcia. “When students are having fun while they’re learning, they’re more engaged and more likely to remember what they discovered.”
For Lamar’s young scientists, it was a lesson that proved learning does not always have to happen from a textbook. Sometimes, the best way to bring science to life is through a little experimentation, a lot of curiosity, and, of course, a root beer float!
